In 2018, Kim was the GOP candidate in California’s 39th congressional district, suffering a narrow defeat by Democrat Gil Cisneros in the general election. In 2020, Kim and Cisneros faced off in a rematch, where Kim defeated Cisneros. Kim and member-elect Michelle Steel became the first Republican congressional candidates to unseat an incumbent House Democrat in California since 1998.

Before running for office, Kim worked for U.S. Rep Ed Royce for more than 20 years as the congressman’s community liaison and director of Asian affairs. During that time, she hosted her own television show, “LA Seoul with Young Kim,” and a radio show called “Radio Seoul” to discuss political issues of the Korean American community. Kim then served one term in the California State Assembly before running for U.S. Congress in 2018.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC

In Congress, Kim hopes to work with federal officials to set up guardrails to prevent a resurgence of COVID-19 or future pandemics. She says she hopes her colleagues study the early missteps in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and invest in U.S. emergency preparedness. Kim expressed her opposition to the HEROES Act, a $3 trillion omnibus stimulus package that passed the House. In the State Assembly, Kim co-authored AB 1578, a bill to make field hospitals ready for deployment in times of emergency by appropriating $2 million for maintenance and upkeep.
