After beginning his career with Boston Consulting Group, including a three-year assignment in Tokyo, Hagerty served as an economic advisor and White House Fellow under President George H.W. Bush. He also served as a national finance chairman for Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign. From 2011 to 2014, Hagerty served in Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s administration as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Hagerty was initially nominated to serve as a delegate for Jeb Bush. Following the Tennessee primary, he served as Trump Victory Chair for Tennessee. He was selected in August 2016 as director of appointments for Trump’s presidential transition team. Hagerty served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019, before resigning to seek the Republican nomination for the Tennessee Senate seat being vacated by Lamar Alexander.
