Bush is a registered nurse and has worked at various health facilities. Bush’s father was a alderman and former mayor. Bush first ran for U.S. Senate in 2016 and placed second in the primary. In 2018, Bush lost her challenge for House seat MO-1, which was held by Democrat William Lacy Clay. She then beat Clay in the 2020 Democratic primary and Republican Anthony Rogers in the general election.

On The Issues

COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Early into the COVID-19 pandemic, Bush was hospitalized with symptoms similar to those affiliated with the coronavirus, though she tested negative. The doctors treating her told her it was likely she had the disease and should self-quarantine.

HEALTH COVERAGE

Bush supports Medicare for All. Her website states: "Medicare For All will eliminate copays, deductibles, and premiums and will cover medical, dental, vision, hearing, reproductive care, maternity care, home health, comprehensive mental health services, substance use treatment, prescription drugs, hospital services, long-term care—you name it, it’s covered."

MARIJUANA

Bush is in favor of legalizing marijuana.

MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION

Bush worked at a mental health clinic. Bush intends to work towards a Medicare for All system that would cover comprehensive mental health services and substance abuse treatment. Bush wants to generally increase access to mental health resources, saying that she intends to work to "expand mental health services, resources and direct access to care both in person and in a digital environment." Bush also wants more diversion programs for nonviolent crimes such as drug possession.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Bush intends for prescription drugs to be covered in her preferred Medicare for All system. Bush has said that she will work to "stop the pharmaceutical industry from price-gouging the American people."

VETERANS HEALTH CARE

In September 2020, Bush attended a Labor Day protest in solidarity with Veterans Affairs employees across the country were demanding more fair contracts.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Bush intends to "advocate for reproductive justice to ensure low-income women, women of color, and trans people have access to comprehensive reproductive health care that includes education, prevention, treatment, assistance, and support," "champion Medicare for All to guarantee that everyone can access reproductive and maternity health care services, regardless of their income," "vote to repeal the Hyde Amendment" and "vote to fully fund Planned Parenthood, Title X, and other initiatives that protect people's access to reproductive health care including contraception, STI testing, and abortion services."

OTHER HEALTH CARE ISSUES

Bush has stated that, as a member of Congress, she intends to work to "eliminate medical debt," "increase the number of doctors, clinics, and hospitals," "invest in innovative research programs to develop new life-saving drugs," "focus on preventive care, [noting that some] preventive measures, such as childhood immunizations and health education for adults regarding daily low-dose aspirin, will save enormous amounts of money and reduce medical costs. Other preventive measures may save less money over the long run, but greatly improve medical outcomes and the quality of life without increasing costs. Additionally, Bush intends to "invest in funding HBCUs and MSIs for training programs to increase the number black doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, therapists, dentists and other medical & dental providers serving our communities."

Bush will be the first Black woman in Congress from Missouri. She founded a church and is a pastor. She was formally homeless and has discussed her experience as a victum of domestic violence. She served as a “pop up” medic during the Ferguson protests of 2014 after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
