2020 ELECTION CONTEXT

Good and other Republican Party activists in the 5th district criticized Riggleman for not standing up for Party values. Part of these criticisms stemmed from disagreements over fiscal and immigration policy, in addition to Riggleman’s decision to officiate a same-sex wedding between two of his friends who had volunteered on his campaign. Good received an endorsement from President Trump.

POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY

Good is the former senior associate athletic director of Liberty University. He was elected to the Campbell County Board of Supervisors in 2015 where he served through his election to the U.S. House. In 2020, the Virginia 5th Congressional District Republican Committee chose to nominate a candidate by convention as opposed to a primary election. Good defeated incumbent Denver Riggleman at the convention with 58% of the vote.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC

In an interview with Rappahannock News in September 2020, Good stated his support for President Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-opening of the economy, but chose not to comment regarding health care after the pandemic. The Washington Post called him a "face mask skeptic."

HEALTH COVERAGE

Good wants the ACA to be repealed while ensuring coverage for pre-existing conditions is protected. In a debate, Good said, "I am in favor of market-driven, patient-centric reform that protects employer-provided health care, that doesn't make it impossible for employer-provided health care to compete with federally funded health care." He also opposes undocumented immigrants having access to taxpayer-funded health care.

Good opposes the legalization of marijuana.

Good was criticized by the Democratic Party for voting in favor of $567,000 in subsidies to Abbott Nutrition to incentivize them to expand their plant in his district because Abbott's parent company played a role in marketing OxyContin, an opioid drug.
