Newman sees Medicare for All as "tried and true" and "the only practical solution," saying, "It is not only the best program, because it will actually contain costs and bring costs down, what I like best about it is that we don't have to keep being restrictive. [Other plans] still have this highly restrictive network and you're still going to be charged unpredictable deductibles and out-of-pocket[s]; pharmaceuticals will continue to skyrocket."
Newman supports the federal legalization of marijuana.
Newman intends to work to "[bring] mental health services to all health care facilities, [decrease] the stigma of mental health diagnoses, and [restore] a budget for mental health research." Newman intends to work to combat the opioid crisis by "passing the CARE Act, which would expand funding for treatment, support, and research on addiction through a 2% a “wealth tax” on ultra-millionaires," "reduc[ing] opioid prescriptions by appropriating funding to research alternative treatments to pain and increasing federal penalties for pharmaceutical companies that overprescribe," "educating health care providers about new initiatives for treatment and alternatives to opioids," "expanding access and funding for addiction treatment and facilities in communities that need them the most" and "[increasing] the use of Naloxone by first responders."
As a member of Congress, Newman intends to work to "reduce drug pricing significantly with negotiated pricing [and] trade with other countries."
As a member of Congress, Newman intends to work to expand medical care for Veterans through the VA system. This includes working to streamline the medical claims process and ensuring that the electronic medical records conversion happens on time and within budget. Newman also intends to work to expand access to mental health resources by increasing the number of locations where Veterans can seek care. In addition, Newman intends to work to increase the health and safety of active duty troops by calling for mandatory incinerator use, funding research on burn pit exposure, including burn pit exposure as a VA recognized disability, and pushing for "the recall and demotion of retired generals that allowed their troops to be exposed to the Afghanistan War version of 'Agent Orange.'"
